Torrential rains hit a wide area of western Japan and caused massive flooding and landslides in July 2018. The worst rain disaster in decades has killed more than 200 in 15 prefectures. In Okayama Prefecture, one of the hardest-hit areas, more than 1,000 people were temporarily trapped on the roofs of buildings submerged by floods. Most of them were rescued by boats or helicopters.
