A vivarium is an area where animals can be observed in an artificially created habitat, e.g. in a zoo. ‘Vivarium humanicum’ deals with the theme of observation from the outside and turns humans, who usually act as observers, into the objects of a new voyeurism, where they are put on display in an artificially created environment. With the help of collage and cross-fading techniques, they are presented to the public as if on a screen or stage, and the viewer perceives them according to their practised visual habits and reacts with interest, sensationalism, disgust, distance or sympathy.
