Finding the right composition when photographing deep space objects can sometimes be more difficult than capturing the faint light they emit. When you want to make the most of your camera's sensor size and lens focal length, and thereby avoid cropping and rotating the final photo, some dilemmas arise right from the start. In front of the nebula lies a cloud of interstellar dust, which blocks its light, splits it in two, and gives it the apparent shape we see.
