Appropriation—often misunderstood—can be a powerful creative tool when used outside the realm of cultural exploitation. At its core, it is the act of taking something from another and making it your own. The "after" series emerged from my desire to delve deeper into the work of my inspirations, reimagining their influence through my lens-based practice and transforming it into something entirely new—pushing my imagery into another dimension.
James William Moore is a lens-based artist whose camp and kitsch-infused photography, video, projection mapping, and installations blend fact and fantasy. His work appropriates politics, pop culture, and daily life to create humorous yet meaningful narratives. Notable series include Tilting at Windmills, Get a Clue, and Madame B’s Tarot Readings, which playfully explore identity.
