“Bombing Master Handan” in Taitung is a breathtaking Lantern Festival tradition. Bare-chested warriors stand fearlessly amid exploding firecrackers, symbolizing protection and blessings. While photographing, I was struck in the ear by a stray firecracker—proof of the ritual’s true danger. Sparks, smoke, and deafening blasts fill the air, yet Master Handan’s unshaken figure embodies the power of courage and faith in Taiwan’s folk culture.
