The 'gilets jaune' (yellow vests) demonstraions were held weekly in various cities across France; beginning in November 2018, and ending with the Covid-19 national lockdown in March 2020. Initially, the protest demanded economic reforms, but later evolved into demands for political reforms. Typical of these demonstrations were blocking of main roads; and not infrequently, riots and violence. Compagnies républicaines de sécurité (CRS) police, specialised in riot control were brought in to control and contain the protestors. We see a mix of personalities in both the CRS and protestors.
