The Amish co-exist among contemporary society in the United States. After fleeing persecution in Europe the 1700s, Amish communities migrated to the US, with a profound commitment to maintain a lifestyle of peaceful community, collective wellbeing, and minimal use of resources. Today, the Amish live alongside 'developed' societies in the midwestern United States, riding horse and buggies and adhering to a conscious commitment to simplicity. Even in their existence as separate societies though, the Amish make important contributions to societies through their innovation and unique adaptations.
