The Menoki Primeval Forest in Aichi Prefecture, rarely graced by snow, is designated a special protection zone. Here, deep in the mountains, I captured the sublime sight of a frost-covered Japanese beech. Looking up at the ice-laden branches, their twisted forms appeared not as boughs reaching for the sky, but as gigantic, undulating roots gripping the earth. This mesmerizing vision evoked the feeling that the ancient tree was desperately striving to anchor its very life force to the ground, connecting its existence to the vast continuity of the world.
