The Anatomy of Obsolescence (A Journey of Curiosity)

  • Photographer

What is the inside of a computer mouse and what parts does a pepper mill consist of? The images reveal the inner workings of consumer goods and visualise their beauty. The disassembly of everyday objects is revealing of our consumer society. Were these objects designed to be repaired in the event of a defect and to give their users many years of pleasure, or were they designed to be thrown away? This work is also a tribute to human creativity, whose uniqueness is being challenged by the advent of AI, and to curiosity, perhaps one of the last human talents not (yet) under pressure from AI.

Daria Martinoni is a non-professional photographer working and living in Zurich, Switzerland. As a Geographer, she uses photography to playfully (de)construct the built urban environment we live in in order to explore our perception of space (and reality). She experiments with long shutter speeds and several zoom settings in one exposure. With this approach, she aimes at questioning our making of the world through experience and knowledge.
