On May 5th, Japan celebrates Children’s Day (Kodomo no Hi), a holiday dedicated to wishing for the healthy growth and happiness of children. Families raise colorful koinobori (carp streamers), symbols of strength and resilience, to express their hopes for children to grow up healthy and spirited. The choice of the carp comes from an old legend: a carp that bravely swam upstream and leapt over the “Dragon Gate” waterfall was transformed into a dragon, symbolizing perseverance and success in life. In this photograph, a parent and child stand beneath the vibrant streamers fluttering in the sky.
