This self-portrait series is a requiem and prayer for the unseen and forgotten lives, born from the loss of a close friend and her unborn child. Through symbols—kimono, cherry blossoms, dolls, light, and water—I explore the shifting threshold between life, death, and rebirth. At its heart, “Dreams Bloom on the Bones of Silence” portrays not fear but resonance beside a skull. Rooted in mono no aware, the work layers time and memory, reaching toward the voiceless with beauty that embraces silence and transience. Created in an age of loss, it seeks to mourn yet also to awaken a fragile hope.
Shii is a Japanese poet, photographer, and self-portrait artist exploring memory, loss, and the fragile border between life and death. Working alone—kimono dressing, makeup, lighting, modeling, and photography—she turns absence into visual poetry. Rooted in mono no aware, she reimagines impermanence through contemporary imagery. Blossoms, water, and filtered light recur as motifs, offering intimate insight into grief that transcends generations and into beauty that holds silence, unspoken farewells, and yugen.
