Every September Barcelona celebrates its patron saint la Mercè (Our Lady of Mercy). To honor her the castellers of different neighbourhoods of the city, each one represented by a distinct shirt colour, gather downtown to build the castells: human towers that require strength, balance, courage and sanity to rise, the four pillars that define this practice. With a base of 50 or more people they erect up to 10 floors crowned by the enxeneta, a child that marks the top by raising the hand certifying the castle is complete. This old Catalan tradition was declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010.
