“…we have no particulars of these burnings, so common had they become, or so unimportant in the opinion of the nation.” History of St. Andrews, v.2 Devil's Mark was inspired by my dissertation research of Scottish witchhunts of 16-18th century in the context of neuroscience and our biological predisposition to behaviours at the heart of witchhunts. Based on the site where "witches" were burned, the project takes its name from the mark on the bodies of the accused, which “evidenced” their pact with the Devil. It is a contemplation of the role of human nature in witchhunts, the past and present.
Victoria is a UK-based visual artist working in analogue, experimental and digital photography, artist book and printmaking. She uses nature and its elements as allegories for human traits and conditions, and draws parallels between human and non-human worlds . Victoria’s practice is largely process driven. She handprints her work and experiments with paper, film and darkroom processing until all elements fall into place.
