“Abstritti 33” focuses on the infinite and cyclical nature of being. The subject of the photograph is an old wall in mid-town Manhattan in which most of the posters had been torn or partially torn away. Color, light, and compositional changes were used to manipulate the elements within the image so as to explore the constant and paradoxical interplay of destruction and creation - a paradox in which decay suggests renewal, and newness implies decline; a paradox that offers an opportunity for both connection and acceptance of the way and will of the universe.
Sam Rittenberg lives and works in New York City and the Dominican Republic. His primary focus is on photography’s ability to explore the paradoxical interplay between the finite and the infinite. He is guided by the belief that every image holds the potential to serve as a portal to what ordinarily lies beyond us.
