The term “shamate”is derived from the English word "smart". The Chinese “smart” youth are widely popular on the Internet because of their abnormal appearance and their famously known over saturated hair but nowadays the era of the Chinese smart youth has vanished. In the southern china, towns and rural villages, still have such phenomenon group of like minded teens gathered together to instill their current identity, using neon colored hair to fight the mainstream aesthetic. I photographed the faces and surroundings of these young people, trying to explore their aesthetic freedom and identity.
