Santa Claus (St. Nicholas) for the Orthodox is what Santa Claus is for the Catholics: according to legends, not only brings gifts to children, but saves people from difficulties. Once a year, on the occasion of the celebrations for San Nicola di Mira on 19 December, the Basilica of San Nicola in Bari becomes the center for the celebration of Orthodox rites. On that date, a bishop designated by the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates a solemn mass in the Basilica which attracts and welcomes faithful and families of the Orthodox community who have come from Puglia and all over Italy.
