In Japan, children are taken to temples and recieve a blessing when girls turn 3 and 7 and boys turn 5 years old. It is called Shichi-Go-San. On these special days, they dress in beautiful and ornate kimonos. It is a precious right of passage and one that was originally intended to celebrate the survival of children back when infant mortality rates were much higher. I ventured to Hokkaido Shrine on this day simply to enjoy the serene surroundings, and was lucky that it happened to be on the day of Shichi-Go-San.
