Procession of The Niang San Parasol ( Mazu’s Parasol) Bearers At The Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage

Each year, the Dajia Zhenlan Temple Pilgrimage draws thousands of worshippers coming from all across the country to walk on the nine-day and eight- night historic trip for 340 kilometers total in length. In 2023 I followed the procession recording moments when the Niang San Parasol was of particular significance. Providing shelter and preventing the occurrence of any inauspicious events, the Niang San Parasol was carried ahead of Mazu’s palanquin. Witnessing Mazu’s many devotees immerse themselves fully in this ritual moved and impacted me deeply.
