It is one of the buildings of Japanese shrines. It is said that it is a passage connecting the divine domain where the gods live and the secular world where humans live. It is a kind of "enchantment". There are many shapes of torii gates, but most of them are composed of two pillars and one or two beams, and some torii gates have a plaque in the center of the beams.
