Icebergs in Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon break off from the glacier Breioamerkurjokull, then continue their journey through the lagoon and out to the Atlantic Ocean. From there the icebergs break up and get washed up on the black sand beach, where they give the appearance of diamonds in the rough. A fun fact, ice that breaks off from glaciers can be up to one thousand years old.
