Nowhere in the world is the identity of women more in crisis than in modern day Turkey: There are those who cover themselves in the cloak of Islam; those who are ultra-modern; and those who are caught in between. This photo is where I capture this third strata. These young ladies are sitting in a trendy café in Istanbul dressed in designer clothing. They are covered in head scarf and long jackets, yet their sophisticated aura match their surroundings. This is why I call this shot Camouflage: the instinctive need for Turkish women to adapt their mentality to the political pressures of Islam.
