The Battle of the Oranges is a festival in the Northern Italian city of Ivrea, which includes a tradition of throwing of oranges between organized groups. The legend tells that Ivrea was once ruled by an evil duke (Guido III against whom the population rose in 1194). The carriages represent the duke's army and the orange throwers the revolutionaries. Violence is attractive because it associates with the enlargement of consciousness: mental and physical agitation, boundary-breaking. Carnival as fun in the sense of a bodily and mental experience that occurs independent of your rational self.
