TIFA 2023 Interview with Alexandros Othonos
1st Place winner in Fine Art, Non-Professional, “Disturbia”

Q: Can you briefly tell us about your background and what inspired you to pursue photography?

Five years ago photography came into my life completely by accident. When I lived in Athens, my friend was studying photography and I was trying to help her with her work and by some magical way I was drawn to it. I realized that photography was the only thing I loved doing.

Q: What drove you to submit your work to the TIFA competition and your thoughts on how winning this competition impacted your artistic journey?

I have always seen artists and photographers I admire enter their work in huge photography competitions like this. I understood that the level of the competition was very high which motivated me to try and enter my work in the competition as well. I believe that winning first place in the competition will help me a lot in my creative journey and give me the opportunity to introduce more and more people from all over the world to my work.

Q: Could you describe any challenges you faced while capturing this moment (winning image)?

There were several challenges. Due to the technique of photography based on water, it was a very demanding process with several difficulties to get the shot right. Despite the difficulties it was a very fun process and I can say that the result was much better than I expected.

Q: What, in your opinion, are the most important factors in creating great images?

I believe that the most important thing in creation is two things. Not to think too much and accept your feelings whatever they are and create. If you have an idea in your mind and start creating it without thinking too much about the result and relax and let yourself go in the creative process, I believe the result will be beautiful and will surprise you.

Q: What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of photography?

When I first started photography I worried too much about what people thought or how they perceived my work. Through the years I realised that if I wanted my photography to stand out, I had to do what represented me the most and be true to myself. At first, I faced many difficulties, but thanks to my passion for photography, I found the solutions I needed.

Q: What motivates and drives your photography?

Everyday I see inspiring projects from photographers from all over the world that create something amazing out of nothing. I feel that, through my work, I am part of this creative family that leaves their artistic mark on the world. This is what makes me continue to search for ways to express myself.

Q: What’s next for you in your career as a photographer?

My next steps are to learn more about photography and to continue to experiment and create art through photography. I hope to receive more awards in the future and to show my work to more people worldwide.
