This series of 3 images, part of my KorinGami project, represent three Uchiwa of Spring. In this photography project I take inspiration from the works of the influential XIVth century Japanese painter and designer Ogata Korin. By using traditional origami techniques, I bring his seasonal botanical compositions into the real world as sculptures of metal and paper. It's a chance to experience what went on in the creative mind of the artist and reinterpret these objects through modern eyes but still in accordance with the gentle sensibility of Japanese aesthetics. To this end, the masterpiece of writer Jun'Ichiro Tanizaki "In Praise of Shadows" has been instrumental in setting the scene in which works of art were traditionally experienced in a Japanese house. Consisting of vast open spaces lit just by candlelight, an appreciation of shadows were at the heart of Japanese houses were the gold used in its fixings glittered alluringly out of the corner of the eye. This is the atmospheres that these photos want to evoke.
