“Pour a little sugar on it…” is a repeating verse in the 1969 pop song “Sugar, Sugar”. Most people have a sweet tooth and sugar has long been a beloved staple in our diet. Not many people know how exactly it is produced, though. A journey to various sugar mills around the world gives some visual insight into the industry. It is amazing to observe that sugar mills today are still able to use machinery that is more than 100 years old and still going strong. The mills work 24/7 during the respective season of the cane or the sugar beet. The off-season is dedicated to repair works.
