Image series inspired by Pictorialist late 19th Century / early 20th Century figure studies of photographers such as Edward Steichen, Frank Eugene and William Mortensen. Reacting to the viewpoint of the camera as a mere mechanism for recording 'truthful' images of people, places and events, Pictorialists sought to instead create symbolic impressions of scenes infused with psychological and spiritual meaning, in order to evoke emotional sensations and states of mind. The emphasis is on beauty, tonality, composition, and an 'otherworldly' aesthetic.

Brence Coghill and Sharon Blance co-own a commercial photography company and also have a creative partnership in which they collaborate on art-driven personal photography projects. Their current creative focus is on analogue and tactile methods of image making inspired by pioneering movements in late 19th Century / early 20th Century photography.
