Rio Tinto mines in Spain have been active since 3000 BC, however, their environmental footprint did not reach significant levels until mid 19th century when an English corporation started exploitation on a large scale. The polluted, highly acidic Rio Tinto, has turned to a deep reddish hue. The mines closed in 2001, but the polluted water remains, building abstract, colorful patterns. The view from the helicopter is both fascinating and tragic.
