Breakdance

For six years I was hired to take photographs of Breakdance competitions. I've always been convinced that I had to tell that story with a special photographic narrative, my own one, in order to be different, unique. I failed during the first five years – the photos were outstanding, according to the work order, however they were missing the compelling narrative which my eyes demanded. Finally, in the last year, I entered the same competition without any expectations, but with the strong conviction that I would continue to do a professional and excellent job for my clients. Due to a technical problem with the lighting, one of the pictures came out in very high contrast, almost black and white. While I was working I saw the picture and I immediately realized what had been my problem over the previous five years: the color photographs during the Breakdance competitions were keeping me away from the spirit of the children; the color scattered their stories in the fight for the first place. It was impossible at that point to change the preferences setting in my camera, and the black-and-white in its highest contrast made me dance with my photographs.
