Men extract coal in a mine in the state of Jharkhand in India. Mining and burning of coal has major implications for personal health, local environments and globally through climate change. India’s state-owned coal mining company Coal India Limited (CIL) is the largest coal producer in the world. Many nations are moving away from coal use to less environmentally damaging resources. In India more than 17% of homes lack electricity which is why CIL plans on increasing coal production.
