The Suri tribe of the Northern Omo Valley In Ethiopia are one of the more isolated of the many tribes. Their culture is, so far, fairly resilient in the face of change. Body scarification, facial and body painting with local clays is still common. In the case of the facial and body painting it was traditionally done as camouflage or for special ceremonies; marriages and stick fights. Now, with an increase in tourism, the tribe have taken ‘Africa Adorned’ to a new level. They have reinvented themselves by creating works of art with painting and embellishments of flowers and berries.
