Rebel 'n' Saint

  • Prize
    Silver in People/Self-Portrait

    Jasmine de Vries

Jasmine has been born in the wrong body. Ten years ago she changed gender. Now she poses for her own pictures. These pictures are inspired by her own life and environment. She uses cinematic scenes to create a structure in the mishmash of events, actions and feelings of herself. This may present ever changing Jasmines, depending on the context. The word ‘persona’ also means ‘mask’, and there is a reason for this. People wear different masks in different settings. She has mainly chosen to capture the themes in theatrical visuals. That is no coincidence. She is a great admirer of David Bowie. It’s safe to say that his interest in the theatre has been the cornerstone of his success. Major Tom, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust and Alladin Sane are just a few of his personae. Most of us will clearly remember them. Each step in his career produced a new character. Just like David Bowie, Jasmine will also stay busy with scenes and characters she does not play a role herself.
