Catholicism faces a serious crisis worldwide and continues to lose followers in Mexico in favor of other religions that are seemingly more adept at addressing the challenges facing ordinary people. According to recent polls, between 19 and 23 million Mexicans are no longer Catholic. Musulmana is a photography project that documents the small but growing Muslim community in Tijuana, just across the border from the United States. The project focuses on Mexican-born Muslim women who have to navigate two distinct and oftentimes conflicting cultures, identities and social realities; their Mexican traditions and customs and their Islamic adopted faith.
